Java in your wallet (the Belgian electronic identity card)

Abstract

The Belgian Federal Public Service 'Internal Affairs' and the National Register put Belgium on the eGovernment map by launching a Java-based electronic identity card.
Marc will situate the use of Java in the card and its ecosystem. He will discuss different development approaches, and highlight some difficulties. Finally he will briefly discuss some examples of the card's use.

Marc Sel - Director Information Protection - PricewaterhouseCoopers

Marc moved through various positions with Texas Instruments, Alcatel and Esso. In January 1989 he joined Coopers & Lybrand, where he started as a consultant. After gradually building up more experience by serving international clients, he now takes on the role of Director for the Belgian "Information Protection" group. He specialises in security and cryptography, from organisational, managerial and technical perspectives. He has a keen interest in authorisations, RBAC, Java, .NET, smartcards, and wireless technologies. He carried out assignments with regard to security for many leading organisations worldwide. He served the Belgian government in projects such as the Belgian Electronic ID card and the Belgian Digital Tachograph. Within PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Marc is a 'Subject Matter Expert' with regard to Emerging Technology.

Marc holds degrees in Information Technology and in Information Security from the Brussels Free University and from the Royal Holloway University of London respectively.
His Information Security thesis won the British Computer Society's 'David Lindsay Memorial' price in 2002.

He is a member of ISACA and holds the CISA anc CISM certifications. He is also an accredited ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Assessor, and ITIL Foundation certified. Finally, he is a member of the BIN (the Belgian ISO entity).
