Java Communities - Participating in the World of Open Source

Abstract

Participation on Open Source projects are not only a way of contributing code or solve problems. It is a special good way to learn, to work with great developers and even to advance in your career.

This interactive BOF will introduce several important Java-related communities, and discuss what is needed to participate in each one.
Also, it will discuss how a developer can approach a community or an open source project, and what you can do to get accepted. The presentation will also cover some strategies for open source project to attract more users and to grow its own community. As a interactive BOF, the presentation will try to introduce ideas, and promote the discussions on how they can be more effective.

Some of the communities that will be introduced or discussed include: Java.net, NetBeans, Apache, JCP, JUGs, sourceforge.net, Eclipse, ObjectWeb.

Speaker: Bruno Souza

Bruno F. Souza is a NetBeans Community Manager, working at the NetBeans Project at Sun Microsystems. A very active Java Evangelist in Brazil, presented hundreds of Java presentations throughout the country and internationally. As a Java consultant, Bruno participated in some of the largest Java projects in Brazil. As founder and coordinator of SouJava (the Java Users Society), and also working with many other JUGs worldwide, Bruno helped drive the growth of the Java community.
